Questions to Ask Moving Companies

Get the most out of your money when hiring residential movers. Staying up to date on a company’s moving strategy could save you money in the long run. When you’re better informed about the services professional movers offer, you’re more likely to partner with a business that can provide a stress-free move that meets your needs.

Use this list of questions to get to know your potential movers before committing. This research may save you a headache on moving day!

1. When was your business founded?

The longer the company has been around, the better. Why? If a company has been around for several years, that’s a sign they’re in good standing with the community. Word gets out quickly about inefficient movers.

2. May I view your storage facility?

Planning on storing your belongings? Make sure the company has a secure storage facility. Ask if you can see the space. If that’s not possible, ask for photos or specifics about its features. For example, make sure it’s equipped with a fire alarm. You’ll also want to know if it’s temperature- and climate-controlled. Do they have a computerized inventory system to track your items as they go in?

3. Have you won any awards for your services?

Companies that have exceptional customer service and are particularly organized are often recognized through awards or other accolades. When hiring a team of movers, ask if they’ve received any of these recognitions. You may find they’ve won local or even national awards.

4. What sort of ratings have you received from customers?

It’s always a good idea to check out ratings from former customers before committing to a moving company. Why? Because you’ll hear both the positives and negatives of working with them. The business’ average rating is usually a convenient indicator of its level of professionalism.

5. How do you protect my home on moving day?

Inquire about the moving team’s strategy for keeping not only your belongings but your current home protected. Some companies take precautions like stretch-wrapping furniture, doorways, and even floors to prevent scratches. Ask whether your movers will use protective padding, custom crates, or any other materials.

6. If my items are damaged during the move, what happens?

Accidents happen with any moving company. Make sure the business you partner with has protection plans. Some companies offer Released Value Protection (which reimburses customers according to an item’s weight) and Full Value Protection (which reimburses customers according to the item’s actual value).

7. How much will I pay for your services?

Request a full quote from the moving company before signing any paperwork. Find out if the estimate is binding or non-binding. Binding quotes are guaranteed to be the amount you pay, whereas non-binding quotes are subject to change. The estimate should explain where charges are coming from and should include storage and packing prices, if desired.
